The number one objective for safety training is to eliminate or minimize accidents by having competent employees working for the employer. Competence is achieved by knowledge, training and experience. An effective, good quality training program should be designed to include theory, practical, testing, case studies, quizzes, open discussion and a final test. The facilitator must be knowledgeable and encourage open discussion. I find participants learn the most by discussing real situations, posssible solutions and outcomes.
Hazard specific training and new hire orientation training is a critical aspect of any health and safety program. Supervisor and worker safety training is important in demonstrating due dilligence and achieving compliance through eliminating accidents. Also, retraining and following up to ensure all employees understand the safe work procedures. Employer compliance through training will also help prevent Ministry of Labour orders or fines.
