Legal Requirements in Ontario
Under Regulation 1101 of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Ontario employers must provide first aid training and maintain appropriate first aid supplies in the workplace.
Key Employer Responsibilities Include:
Ensuring at least one worker on each shift is certified in first aid
Maintaining fully stocked first aid kits based on the number of employees
Posting first aid certificates and emergency contacts in visible areas
Keeping records of all first aid treatment administered in the workplace
Required Training Levels:
Emergency First Aid (1-day course): Required for workplaces with 5 or fewer workers on any shift
Standard First Aid (2-day course): Required for workplaces with more than 5 workers on any shift
CPR (Level A, C, or BLS): Often included and highly recommended
Training must be delivered by a WSIB-approved provider and renewed every three years.
