Common Gaps to Watch out for in a Health and Safety Program:

There is always room for improvement! Some common issues include:

  • Lack of continuous and post event program reassessment
  • Discipline and discharge for OHS infractions
  • Ensuring the safety committee is active and productive
  • Ackknowledge success of program annually

OHS Tips:

  • Consistency is the hallmark of a solid OHS program
  • Devote time to train workers on specific procedures
  • Coach employee on your prevention expectations
  • Address and discipline OHS policy violations
  • If you do not discipline consistently the courts will look at this as condoning safety violations
  • Can also lead to an arbitrator to rule against an employer in a wrongful dismissal suit is there is no consistent enforcement
  • Review all your policies annually
